Medical Assessment & Treatment of Leg Veins
Sclerotherapy Clinic
Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to treat thread veins (telangiectasia) and reticular veins on the legs. Treatment suitability depends on the size, location and type of vessel, as well as overall vascular health.
At Dr Sharon Delaney Aesthetic Medicine, every patient undergoes a structured medical assessment before treatment is recommended. This ensures that the most appropriate and safest treatment approach is selected.
Conditions We Treat
We commonly assess and treat:
- Thread veins (telangiectasia)
- Reticular veins
- Symptomatic superficial veins
- Recurrent superficial veins following previous treatment
Patients with larger varicose veins, venous reflux or underlying vascular disease may require further investigation, including duplex ultrasound, and referral to a vascular specialist where appropriate.
ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT OPTIONS
Injection sclerotherapy is not always the most suitable treatment for every type of vein.
Depending on vessel depth and presentation, alternative or complementary options may include:
- Vascular laser or light-based treatments for superficial facial or fine leg vessels
- Compression therapy using medical-grade hosiery
- Lifestyle measures, including weight management, exercise modification and reducing prolonged standing
- Referral for vascular surgery assessment where larger varicosities or venous reflux are present.
The most appropriate treatment pathway is determined following clinical evaluation.

What the Procedure Involves
Your appointment typically includes:
- Medical history and vein assessment
- Skin preparation
- Injection of a medical sclerosant solution into targeted vessels
- Application of compression following treatment
- Detailed aftercare guidance
The sclerosant solution causes controlled irritation of the vein wall, leading to gradual closure of the vessel. Over time, the body naturally reabsorbs the treated vein.

Treatment Duration & Downtime
Appointment duration: approximately 60 minutes.
Patients may experience:
- Mild stinging during injection
- Bruising or temporary discoloration
- Localised swelling or tenderness
Compression is recommended for 5–7 days following treatment.
Walking is encouraged immediately after the procedure. Patients should avoid strenuous lower-body exercise and heat exposure (such as hot baths or saunas) for 48 hours.
Temporary pigmentation changes can occur but usually resolve gradually.
Number of Treatments
Most patients require 1–3 treatment sessions, depending on the extent of veins present.
Sessions are typically spaced 6–8 weeks apart, allowing time for gradual improvement.
Veins fade progressively over 6–12 weeks. Complete clearance cannot always be guaranteed, and maintenance treatments may be required over time.
